Our Painted Cabinet Door Process
Every Nieu painted door goes through the same disciplined, multi-stage process - engineered for a smooth finish and long-term durability.
1. MDF Selection
We use high-performance Canadian-made MDF that complies with MR10 24-hour submersion testing for moisture resistance. Compared to solid wood, MDF delivers an ultra-smooth paint finish and better long-term stability - with no warping or cracking at corner seams.
Our MDF is EPA and CARB compliant and FSC certified. QC inspects every sheet before it reaches the routers.
2. CNC Programming, Cutting & Routing
Every order is programmed to maximize yield and minimize waste as fronts and panels are machined from larger sheets. CNC machining allows one-piece and two-piece doors to be cut with precision.
Customization includes profile selection, sizing, hinge boring, and system holes for IKEA assembly.
3. Assembly and Sanding
Skilled assembly of two-piece profiles takes old-school attention to detail and a sharp eye so every door and drawer front passes the second stage of quality control.
A combination of hand and machine sanding delivers smooth fronts, crisp profiles, and clean edges.
4. Primer Application
A commercial flatline finishing system - 80 feet long and fully automated - sprays a 2K primer and tinted primer coat, followed by another round of sanding and a second coat of primer.
5. Fine Sanding & Inspection
A final round of detailed hand sanding, followed by QC inspection, leaves us with ultra-smooth fronts that are ready for top-coating.
6. Color Coat Application
A 2K conversion varnish - a mix of clear resin and colorized pigment - is sprayed onto fronts using our flatline finishing system. The topcoat is self-sealing, laying down smooth with excellent scratch and chemical resistance.
If you select a Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, or Farrow & Ball color outside our standard lineup, we run a test draw-down and ship it to you for approval.
7. Flash & Cure
A convection tunnel and drying racks let the topcoat chemically cross-link, which hardens the finish and makes it more chemical-resistant, UV-resistant, moisture-resistant, and scratch-resistant.
8. Final Buff, QC & Packaging
A final buff and quality inspection check for color and sheen consistency. Any pieces needing rework are flagged and sent back through the process before orders are packaged in custom cartons.
